didn’t last 10 years
I had to purchase another because the last one only lasted 2 years, not the 10 as advertised. The alarm kept going off, and there is nothing to be done except disable it and replace.

Necessary
It is necessary to have both smoke and carbon monoxide. I picked this brand because I had it previously and it lasted 10 years. I thought I could reinstall into the same plate, but unfortunately I did have to change out the plate. I am not handy but was able to install it fairly quickly. Good design, low frills but battery on my last one lasted a long time. Doesn’t go off for trivial things but is sensitive to shower steam if I don’t close the door. Decent value for what you get.

Total Trash. Buy your alarms at Home Depot if you want customer service and don’t buy Kidde.
I purchased 5 of these 13 months ago. I thought I will pay the extra for Lithium battery alarm so I won’t have to get up and down a ladder changing batteries. Boy was I mistaken. I’m 70 yrs old so I can’t really be going up and down ladders.The five smoke & Carbon Monoxide detectors cost me $262.55 plus $125 to have installed.So far three have malfunctioned in 13 months beeping and yelling fire during the night. I removed them and contacted the Amazon seller who referred me to Kidde who manufactured them which makes sense until I contacted Kidde. There is a 10 yr stamped right on the alarm. Here is what Linda Rush from Kidde customer service wrote me” To assist with troubleshooting, what rooms in your home are the units located in? Are the units located near a fan, vent, bathroom or window? How often do you clean the alarms as nuisance alarms particularly in the middle of the night, are caused by something interfering with the sensor. These units are looking for particles of combustion, so when a small insect or piece of dust gets into the sensor, the unit will interpret this as smoke particles.”THEY WANT ME TO GET ON A LADDER AND CLEAN INSECT AND DUST PARTICLES OUT OF THE ALARM????No offer of replacement even with the 10yr warranty. Do yourself a favor and buy your alarms at Home Depot. You can return them to Home Depot.

Smoke Detector
My old smoke detector of the same brand was about 20 years old and finally broke down. I purchased this one of the same brand. It is very easy to install, very functional. The old one alerted me to a couple of kitchen fires quickly so I am reassured as to reliability, safety, sensitivity. Chirp frequency has never been a problem. Highly satisfied with this product.
